Sodium Microcrystalline Cellulose
Sodium microcrystalline cellulose (also known as co-processed microcrystalline cellulose and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or colloidal microcrystalline cellulose) is a functional excipient produced by a special co-processing of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na). It is not a single substance, but a composite material with synergistic properties.
In this system, CMC-Na acts as a "bridge", coating the MCC particles and significantly improving their dispersibility in water. The composite forms a unique three-dimensional network structure, combining the rigid skeletal structure of MCC with the hydrophilicity of CMC-Na.
When dispersed in water, it forms a thixotropic gel:
High viscosity at rest (ensuring stable suspension)
Low viscosity under shear (facilitating processing and handling)

Core Applications
Applications in the Pharmaceutical Field
Microcrystalline cellulose is one of the most commonly used excipients in the pharmaceutical industry, known as a dry binder, especially playing multiple roles in tablet production: Filler: When the amount of active pharmaceutical ingredient is very small, it is used to increase the tablet size, making it suitable for pressing and taking. Binder: It has good compressibility, and when pressed, hydrogen bonds form between molecules, binding other powders together, giving the tablet sufficient hardness and preventing it from breaking easily. Disintegrant: This is its most remarkable function. After the tablet enters the body, microcrystalline cellulose rapidly absorbs water and swells, like countless miniature bombs, causing the tablet to disintegrate into fine particles within minutes, thereby accelerating drug release and absorption.
Health Roles in the Food Sector
Dietary Fiber: It is a high-quality insoluble dietary fiber. Although it cannot be absorbed by the human body, it can promote intestinal peristalsis, increase satiety, and help maintain intestinal health.
Stabilizer and Thickener: In products such as ice cream, yogurt, and salad dressing, it can stabilize foam and emulsions, prevent oil-water separation, and give the product a smooth and thick texture.
Anticaking Agent: In powdered foods, it can prevent particles from sticking together, keeping the powder free-flowing.
Texture Specialist in the Cosmetics Field
Texture Adjustment: In creams and lotions, it can function as a thickener and suspending agent, making the product texture more stable and richer.
Makeup Effect Optimization: In pressed powders and loose powders, it serves as a high-quality filler, making the powder finer and more adherent. In liquid foundations, it helps create a natural matte finish and absorbs excess skin oil.
Skin Feel Enhancement: Its tiny particles can fill in skin textures, reduce friction, and make skincare products feel smoother when applied.
How safe is MCC?
Microcrystalline cellulose is very safe. It is recognized as "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) by the U.S. FDA and is approved for use in foods, medicines, and cosmetics worldwide. It is a chemically inert substance, not absorbed when ingested, almost non-toxic, and non-irritating.
